Things are not going well on Ilus. Between the planetwide cataclysm, the unending threat of the poisonous death slugs, the disabling of all fusion reactions, and the alien organism infecting everybody's eyeballs, the conflict among the colonists doesn't seem so bad. Holden can look on the bright side. Because he's the only one not going blind.
